Position Description:
The Director of Cloud Operations is a critical role that must balance both strategy and tactics to evolve Softdocs’ Software-as-a-Service application to a performant, available, and scalable enterprise application utilizing Azure cloud with a Zero Trust architecture. This role owns the infrastructure performance and strives to balance optimal resource usage, customer experience, and costs. This person will understand the value of proactive infrastructure design and strive for monitoring, logging, and reporting that will detect issues before customers do and improve reliability through tooling, services, and automation. This person will be an advocate for compliance and security on behalf of the department and represent our stance in client and prospect situations.
This person will collaborate with Engineering to create Azure cloud environments and services for new features in development. This will require modeling viable alternatives to ensure appropriate resource consumption and cost, considerations for performance, scalability, and availability, and support of both existing and new environments during the transition period.
As Softdocs transitions from on-premises software to fully cloud, this role will assist in transitioning the remaining clients to the cloud, but also understanding that clients move at different speeds, will assist in upgrades, escalations, and outages for both cloud and on-premise clients as needed.
This role reports to the VP of Product and Engineering and is highly integrated with the Director of Engineering in building and fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and DevOps mindset among the entire team. This role will lead a team of cloud engineers responsible for both on-premise and cloud infrastructure, mentoring members in career and skill growth, and developing an organized, efficient team with repeatable practices.
Responsibilities:
Strategic
  • Own the system performance of our production Azure cloud environment and collaborate to optimize resource usage and manage current Cloud spending in alignment with company goals without sacrificing customer experience.
  • Build, optimize, and collaborate with Engineering on our new Azure platform cloud environment using modern and scalable cloud strategies and zero trust architecture.
  • Assist in transitioning our remaining on-premise customers toward cloud.
  • Collaborate in ownership of a healthy DevOps culture.
  • Collaborate Release Train Engineer to align Cloud Team projects with Scaled Agile planning and execution.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Compliance and Director of Engineering to ensure cloud meets compliance and security requirements.
Tactical
  • Analyze, plan, and execute, in conjunction with Director of Engineering, the efficient use of cloud resources, logging, and proactive and reactive monitoring.
  • Understand and streamline Cloud and On-Premise upgrades, outages, and escalations when required.
  • Support cloud scaffolding between older applications and the new platform until product deprecation.
  • Communicate our security posture with clients and prospects.
  • Own the scheduling and rollout of Cloud team’s involvement in 24-7 support.
  • Automate provisioning and scaling of resources to match demand.
  • Align with Scaled Agile (SAFe) to prioritize, execute, and track Cloud projects transparently with the organization.
Management
  • Analyze and build the necessary Cloud team
  • Mentor and shape the skills of the team to be high performing
Skills and Experience:
  • Strong background and experience building, deploying, and supporting reliable, scalable, and secure SaaS solutions on Azure cloud platform.
  • Experience as a manager or director of Cloud services for a SaaS software
  • Understanding of cloud platform services (DBaaS, containers, events, storage, etc). Data Science and AI is a plus.
  • Awareness and understanding of security and compliance.
  • Demonstrated experience managing cloud spend and budgets.
  • Passion for and experience with DevOps methodology and teams.
  • Understanding of cloud and cloud architectural patterns.
  • Ability to support business case justification using business scenario modelling and perform benefits analysis.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to have conversations with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience executing within an agile organization. SAFe is a plus.
  • B.S. in CPSC, CIS, Engineering, or related experience. CISSP or CSSP is a plus.
