The Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy is the nonprofit partner of the National Park Service overseeing the Golden Gate National Recreation Area — 82,000 acres of national parkland spanning the San Francisco Bay Area, including Muir Woods, Ocean Beach, Crissy Field, and Alcatraz Island. The Parks Conservancy is a membership organization created to preserve the Golden Gate National Parks, enhance the experiences of park visitors, and build a community dedicated to conserving the parks for the future.

Department Description:
The Interpretive Centers and Sales Department is responsible for developing and operating visitor centers throughout the Golden Gate National Parks, providing visitor information, orientation, and other direct services. Conservancy Interpretive Centers provide educational, functional, and proprietary park merchandise along with changing park exhibits. Interpretive Centers include Alcatraz Park Stores, Muir Woods Visitor Center, Lands End Lookout, Warming Hut, Fort Point Park Store, Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center, and Presidio Visitor Center. The department also develops park books, maps, and interpretive and branded products, manages warehousing and distribution, operates the Muir Woods Fee Collection program and develops and operates the Conservancy’s online sales and wholesale programs.
Position Overview:
The Director of Alcatraz Retail (DAR) is responsible for developing strategies to ensure the stabilization and long-term growth of retail operations on Alcatraz Island. The DAR will direct operations to maximize the financial success and positive visitor experience. Through the planning and implementation of policies, procedures, and training, the DAR will create a positive work environment, an effective business environment, emphasizing staff development, safety, and advancement to create a valuable team of visitor service professionals. The DAR is responsible for ensuring that income goals are met or exceeded, the budget is monitored, expenses are controlled, and records are accurately maintained. The DAR is the key representative/liaison for the retail division pertaining to Alcatraz Island related issues. They will attend meetings and keep their supervisor and staff informed about ongoing concerns and changes. The DAR will maintain a positive and productive relationship with Conservancy staff in other departments and effective collaboration with the NPS and Alcatraz City Cruises. The DAR will oversee the guest author program to create a smooth running and positive experience for the authors and visitors and ensure its financial success. As this position may require physical labor and lifting, the manager is responsible for considering physical safety for themselves while engaging in strenuous activity.
Supervision: This position will have direct reports and the authority to direct and coach retail managers and staff on both organizational and branch goals, programs, and deliverables.
Reports: Manager Alcatraz Sales and Manager Alcatraz Inventory
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Direct, Develop, and Lead Alcatraz Operations
  • Develop, implement, and lead all retail programs, communications, and resources focused on staff, inventory, merchandising, signage and visitor experience satisfaction.
  • Develop and manage annual site budget and expenses in collaboration with Senior Director of Interpretive Centers and Sales (SDICS) and Alcatraz retail leadership.
  • Implement retail policies and procedures in collaboration with SDICS and AZ retail leadership to ensure effective, streamlined, and profitable division.
  • Manage and participate in monthly barge deliveries, working with Director of Alcatraz Operations.
  • Direct the ordering and warehousing of products and publications on island.
  • Direct the data analysis and reporting to identify, analyze, and communicate trends to improve overall sales performance.
  • Guide and develop author program to ensure its continuance and financial goals, schedule authors, manage communication
  • Direct year-end inventory and reconciliation processes.
  • Collaborate with senior branch leadership on new projects and opportunities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Staff Development, Communication, and Management Collaboration:
  • Direct, coach, train, and support Alcatraz Sales and Inventory Managers on optimizing operations, visitor service, sales, and profitability.
  • Recruit, interview, and hire staff ensuring an equitable hiring practice, working with staff, and the People and Culture team to find and bring on qualified candidates.
  • Work with SDICS and People and Culture Branch to identify issues and implement changes in strategy and policies to promote a service spirit and create a collaborative work culture.
  • Collaborate with Senior Interpretive Team and Site Managers to develop a cohesive work culture and management team.
  • Meet with SDICS on a regular basis to keep them informed on all Alcaraz retail matters, address concerns in a timely manner, ask for help, seek advice, and ensure all actions follow Conservancy policies and protocols.
  • Support compliance to the Paycor process and completing new hire checklist.
  • Ensure the maintenance of timely and proper documentation for Performance Management and Disciplinary Action.
  • Administer and ensure the completion of the Annual Performance Reviews for the Alcatraz retail team.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Conservancy, Partner, and Community Liaison
  • Collaborate with Visitor Services and NPS partners on analyzing and developing strategies to improve visitor services and increase visitation.
  • Collaborate with leadership to ensure that all spaces and programs are accessible and relevant for all communities.
  • Create and maintain effective partnerships with staffs from various Conservancy departments for support and to advance our collective mission.
  • Act as Senior liaison and point of contact with Alcatraz partners, attend meetings, join committees/task forces, and share information with appropriate parties.
  • Represent branch to foster positive community relations on Alcatraz with Indigenous People and others.
DEI, Safety, and Facilities:
  • Ensure an equitable and inclusive work culture and environment, advancing the Conservancy’s DEI initiatives.
  • Ensure effective communication and collaboration with Alcatraz Operations team, and Conservancy Facilities and IT teams to ensure sites are safe, well maintained, and repaired in a timely, effective manner.
  • Facilitate effective collaboration and communications with Conservancy Safety Team.
  • Manage inventory levels and efficacy of PPE, sanitization products.

COVID-19 (specific duties):
  • Understand and comply with State and local health regulations and protocols at work.
  • Complete mandatory Covid-19 training by designated time. Modules #1 and #2 required for all staff. Module #3 required for Supervisors.
  • Complete daily self-health checklist prior to reporting to work for scheduled shift. Inform Manager/Supervisor at least 30 minutes before start of shift if you’re not feeling well to report to work.
  • Read, sign, and comply with Conservancy Face Coverings Policy. Must ensure all employees always wear face coverings on site (except while eating on break).
  • Wear disposable gloves when interacting with visitors, doing tasks, or cash handling. (optional)
  • Maintain and ensure staff adheres to social distancing and COVID hygiene protocols at all times.
  • Sanitize your hands frequently and the POS equipment (credit card reader) and pens before and after visitor use.
  • Assign cleaning and disinfecting duties to staff to complete throughout their scheduled shifts.

Education and/or Experience:
  • Minimum of five years in high-volume and logistically complicated retail environment, hospitality, or food service management roles.
  • Previous staff supervisory experience.
  • Previous policy and training program development experience.
  • Knowledge of or ability to utilize POS systems.
  • Ability to create and analyze sales and inventory reports.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, especially including Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, and PowerPoint.
Physical Requirements and Work Environments:
These physical demands are representative of the physical requirements necessary for an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job:
  • This position is located on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco and may also include work in other park locations including Fort Mason.
  • This position is 5-days per week onsite, including one weekend day.
  • Work is primarily performed sitting and standing, walking, reaching
  • May lift, carry, and position objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • May drive a forklift; training provided by the Parks Conservancy
  • May perform work on a dock and on a barge
  • CA Driver’s License required, as needed for transportation on Alcatraz Island
  • Ability to travel to work locations across the San Francisco Bay Area, including Alcatraz, and main office location.
Salary/Benefits: The salary range for this position is $100,000 to $105,000.
