Job Summary:

The External Communications Director is an experienced communications and public relations strategist responsible for representing the organization's viewpoint and values to external stakeholders and the media. This position oversees media relations (external communications) at the health system level and provides strategic direction in external communications and media relations to protect the organization's image and reputation and assure alignment with its brand, strategic plan and operational priorities. Serves as a key communications adviser to chief executive officer and president, c-suite leaders and senior leaders in developing strategic external messaging for business and financial operations. Leads external crisis communications planning in partnership with internal communications, and manages the organization's external communications and media response to critical or controversial issues; co-leads 24/7 communications staff; advises vice president of marketing and communications on external communications and media relations issues; and serves as public information officer. This position oversees staffing and daily operations of the media relations (external communications) team and project coordinator.

EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION:

Minimum of ten years experience in public relations with an emphasis on media relations and including supervisory experience.


EDUCATION DESCRIPTION:


Bachelors degree in Communication, Public Relations, Journalism or related field.

EDUCATION PREFERRED:

Masters degree a plus.

SPECIAL SKILLS DESCRIPTION:


Demonstrated success in executing on external communication campaigns and media relations based on sound judgment and an understanding of business risks and rewards. Possesses effective verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated editing skills. Understanding of business and financial communications. Ability to manage and prioritize multiple demands in a fast-moving team environment under constant

SPECIAL SKILLS PREFERRED:

Health care media relations or communications experience preferred. Experience with business and financial communications a plus.
