Summary

The Director, Business Operations provides strategic planning and guidance for the business and financial operations of the Advanced Technology Cores, which includes 26 institutional research cores and 100+ research staff with an average annual operating budget of $14 million. The ideal candidate will exhibit exceptional leadership, management, and ability to create and analyze operational data. This position is eligible for an annual performance-based bonus.

Job Duties

  • Plans and oversees the annual budget process and development for each core facility in close collaboration with core leadership and the Executive Director. The Operational budget is comprised of grant revenue, service center income, and College investment.
  • Actively participates and contributes to program and business planning such as process improvement and operational changes.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert for college departments and centers on core business and finance operations.
  • Leads contract negotiations, including service agreements between the core facilities and industry partners, equipment leases, and demo agreements, in addition to any other ad hoc agreements for the group. Collaborates with core leadership to create and update cost analyses for core services performed.
  • Oversees the pre and post-award management for the current portfolio of grants - 5 CPRIT Core Facility awards, 1 P30 NCI grant, 1 foundation grant, and several NIH S10 equipment grants.
  • Directly manages administrative staff in ATC and indirectly supervises research staff in the core facilities.
  • Manages space inventory for all cores consisting of approximately 48,000 total square feet across several BCM and TCH buildings.
  • Participates in the recruitment of research staff and faculty in core facilities.
  • Reviews and approves human resources transactions, including but not limited to hiring, terminations, promotions, equities, reclassifications, etc.
  • Monitors and approves high-dollar financial transactions.
  • Directs special projects including onboarding new cores, sunsetting cores, new initiatives, etc.
  • Develops and implements successful strategies for revenue growth and expense control.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Eleven years of directly related experience with four years of supervisory experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree and seven years of directly related experience with four years of supervisory experience may also be considered.
  • Progressively responsible management experience in administrative management, including proficiency in budgeting, administration, and personnel management.
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Excel.
