Job Summary:

Perform decontamination, deactivation, abatement, and decommissioning/waste operations (D&D/WO) assignments safely in hazard controlled work environments (radiological, asbestos, lead, industrial, chemical hazards, etc.) by performing duties within a crew environment, which is controlled by supervision; following all safety and security rules, procedures, and practices.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • High School education or equivalent.
  • No prior experience required.

Other Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • Must be able to successfully complete the training requirements as a D&D/WO Specialist, Labor Grade 8.
  • Must be able to successfully complete and maintain all other qualifications deemed necessary.
  • Use of tools and equipment necessary to perform jobs.
  • Must be able to wear Personal Protective Clothing
  • Must be respirator qualified
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and perform other demands of the job with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Work Schedule: Subject to Shift Work
  • Working knowledge of various computer software including Microsoft Office.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a HSPD-12 badge which requires an Office of Personnel Management (OPM) background investigation, OPM clearance for this badge is required following hire.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Previous experience performing decontamination, deactivation, asbestos abatement, and decommissioning/waste operations (D&D/WO) assignments in a hazard controlled work environment preferred.
  • Experience with heavy equipment operation
  • Mechanical and construction experience


Essential Functions :

  • Complete work requirements by following the direction of the supervisor; following policies and procedures; obeying all radiological, safety, and industrial hygiene rules and regulations.
  • Operate various tools, equipment and systems to complete job requirements including, but not limited to, fork trucks, hoisting and rigging equipment, power tools, build cribbing, man lifts, and utilities by following manufacturer’s instructions and established procedures; troubleshooting; adhering to good operating practices; making adjustments; calling for repairs.
  • Complete job requirements by performing a variety of decontamination/contamination control tasks including waste packaging.
  • Document actions by completing required records, data sheets, and reports.
  • Perform work in hazard controlled work environments by donning and doffing required radiological personal protective equipment (PPE); following radiological, safety, and operations policies and procedures. This includes asbestos abatement activities.
  • Complete D&D/WO duties by packaging contaminated waste, performing size reduction, and practicing contamination control in hazard controlled work environments.
  • Support D&D/WO duties by operating various lifting equipment, including cranes and hoists, when qualified within the site’s training program in accordance with established instruction.
  • Complete work requirements by performing a variety of decontamination/contamination control tasks in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and work documents as they relate to D&D procedures in radiological areas of the site.
  • Complete a variety of decontamination and decommissioning duties in highly radiological contaminated environments by operating CCTV cameras, remote manipulators, tooling, and cranes.
  • Complete decontamination or fixing of radiological contamination by employing various chemical and mechanical techniques.
  • Obtain samples for characterization purposes by performing tell-tailing and core-drilling activities.
  • Support decontamination and decommissioning efforts by isolating utilities and equipment.
  • Support contamination control during decontamination and decommissioning tasks by donning/doffing anti-contamination clothing, constructing containment devices, and setting up ventilation units.
  • Support ALARA practices by performing shielding placement and mock up activities.
  • Maintain technical knowledge by completing requirements on project checklists; briefings; and training courses as required.
  • Assist in the development of other D&D/WO Operators by providing assistance with on-the-job training as required.
  • May provide guidance to other personnel.
  • Perform work within a crew environment which is controlled by supervision following established procedures and methods.
  • Perform other job related duties as directed by Supervisor.
  • Perform other work within the bargaining unit as assigned by Supervisor for which the employee is qualified to perform safely.
  • Regular attendance is required.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
