POSITION SUMMARY:

The Cashier/Checkout associate receives cash, gift certificates, credit cards or ATM cards from customers or associates in payment for goods or services. They operate cash register / AR computer system to compute and record total sale and bags merchandise for customers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

CHECKOUT:

  • Prepares Cash Register and Assigned area to ensure it is ready to accept customers.
  • Is responsible for all the procedures related to Cashiering including full responsibility for monies under his/her control.
  • Inspects merchandise prior to bagging to see that it is in satisfactory condition and verifies sales slip with price tickets on merchandise.
  • Records amount of sale on cash register and makes change.
  • Obtains credit authorization on Credit Sales as needed.
  • Updates customer information as required.
  • Balances cash register on a daily basis.

CASHIER:

  • Computes or re-computes bill, itemized lists, and tickets showing amount due.
  • Makes change, cashes checks, and issues receipts or tickets to customers.
  • Records amounts received and prepare reports of transactions.
  • Reads and records total shown on cash register tape and verifies against cash on hand.
  • Quotes price and describe features of items for which money is received.
  • Gives cash refunds or issues credit memorandum to customers for returned merchandise.
  • Operates cash register by passing price coded items across electronics scanner to record price, compile printed list, and display cost of customer purchase, tax, and rebates on monitor screen.
  • Balances cash register on a daily basis.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

SKILLS & ABILITIES

Education
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience

The candidate must have a minimum of six months of cashiering experience.

Language Skills

Associate must have the ability to speak and understand English and Spanish at a conversational level. Must be able to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Must also be able to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other associates of the organization.


Computer Skills


The candidate must have basic computer skills and be able to use a computer keyboard.
