This hiring event will fill Corrections Officer positions at Indian Creek Correctional Center and St. Brides Correctional Center.

The Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) is looking for motivated persons interested in becoming a part of an organization to support our mission, vision, and values centered around improving long-term public safety. The hiring event will be held on monthly at the Virginia Career Work Center located at 861 Glen Rock Road, Norfolk, VA 23502, from 8:00am until 4:00pm.

CORRECTIONS OFFICER HIRING EVENT. Qualified applicants will be invited to attend this after successfully applying for this position.

Corrections Officers contribute to the agency’s public safety mission by providing for the safety and security of the public, staff, and offenders by ensuring effective and safe custody and control along with compliance with policy and procedure. This is successfully accomplished through the use of evidence based practices and principles that enhance effective communication strategies and role modeling as part of collaborative multi-disciplinary teams addressing offender needs. Officers provide security over adult offenders at the institution and while in transport; supervise the daily activities of offenders while observing and recording their behavior and movement to ensure their safe and secure confinement. They interact with the visitors, staff, offenders and public to maintain orderly and secure operations.

Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma or a GED equivalent. Valid Driver’s License. Demonstrated ability to read and comprehend workplace policies and procedures and to prepare workplace reports and documentation. Ability to lawfully possess a firearm in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Preferred Qualifications: Prefer coursework at a community college, college, or university. Prefer individuals at least 21 years old (a waiver may be provided by the Unit Head for individuals 18-20 years old). Stable employment history, Previous Corrections, Military or relevant law enforcement, security or criminal justice experience. Current or former DCJS certification, where certification can be reinstated by attendance at in-service and range. Bi-lingual and Multi-lingual applicants are encouraged to apply.

Please Note: All persons that are newly hired, rehired, transferred, promoted, or demoted into a Corrections Officer position must serve a new 12-month probationary period. This excludes current Virginia Department of Corrections security employees possessing an active DCJS Corrections Officer Certification.
