The Community School Navigator (CSN) creates, strengthens, and maintains the bridge between the Adult Education and Strong Community Schools. Provides oversight and coordination of the integration and alignment of Adult Education programs and classes with Parent Centers and Strong Community Schools (school day, evening and Saturday Academy). The Community School Navigator (CSN) shall establish a very visible presence within Adult Education assuming a strong leadership role. The Community School Navigator is hired by Say Yes in consultation with the Director of Adult Education and the Associate Superintendent of Strategic Alignment and Innovation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership

  • Provide leadership for coordinating the work of multiple instructors within the schools.
  • In partnership with the Principal and School-based CSN, identify appropriate programs to meet the identified needs for daytime, evening, and Saturday Academy.
  • Work with school based CSN to maintain a focus on results and track progress.
  • Participates on leadership teams of Adult Education and Community Schools, (i.e. Zone meetings)
  • Develop strong relationships with teachers, parents and students
  • Partner with the Parent Center Liaisons and Family Support Specialist to ensure that families have meaningful opportunities to participate in Adult Education programs.
  • Build relationships and mechanisms to effectively link programming between the schools and Adult Education.
  • Facilitates alliances and partnerships with non-profit partners and other agencies to establish a continuum of services for adults, parents, and community residents.
  • Partner with school clerk to process instructor payroll requisitions
  • Lead role in hiring decision of instructors. Managing onboarding process once hired by BPS.
  • Assist with recruiting course specific instructors.
  • Working non-traditional hours to maintain program success, present for evening offerings at each location to maintain data collection & instructor presence

Community Outreach/Engagement

  • Represents Adult Education at community meetings and events
  • Conduct community outreach/recruitment on a weekly basis (door-to-door, tabling, presentations, telephone calls, social media, etc.)
  • Assist Zone Leader in the planning, design and implementation of community events (i.e. employment fair).

Data Management

  • Utilize Data Dashboard management system to gather, maintain and report on attendance, program/course completion of programs offered.
  • Support the evaluation of the Adult Education programming by coordinating the collection of data, timely submission of reports and responses to other requests for information.
  • Prepare and present relevant data (i.e., attendance, engagement) at school based and zone meetings
  • Manage workflow utilizing project management tool, Smart Sheet
  • Ensure that course evaluation summaries are distributed and collected and forwarded to the evaluation team.

Professional Development

  • Participate in professional development opportunities centered around the development of full-service Community Schools, Adult and Family engagement and Adult Education evidence-based practices.
  • Participate with Coalition of Community Schools Site Facilitators Network - Professional Development (webinars, conference calls, etc.)
  • Participate in/and provide training and technical assistance to ensure cultural and linguistic appropriateness of services, programs, and communication efforts (where applicable)

Qualification, Skills and Knowledge Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a human services field with at least 4 years of community-based experience
  • Valid NYS Driver’s license
  • Ability to work flexible hours (evenings and weekends)
  • Bi-lingual skills may be needed depending on needs of school
  • Ability to work effectively with school aged youth, educators, families and communities from a wide range of cultural, social and economic backgrounds
  • Experience working in school-based settings, with knowledge about tenants of community organizing, student support services, and youth development theories
  • Ability to work collaboratively, “build bridges” with strong relationship building skills
  • Fingerprinting and background check clearances
  • Ability to work in school bureaucracy
  • Adhere to Adult Education, school policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of community resources
  • Ability to collaborate with school, district, and community leaders, and to convene partners and facilitate meetings
  • Ability to collect and analyze data to inform decisions
  • Working knowledge of program-based budgeting and request for proposals
  • Past project management experience
  • Ability to organize, prioritize and respond to deadlines while working on multiple tasks
  • Exhibits ability to be a creative thinker and self-starter
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
