A Combination Pipe Welder secures components together using electric welding. Creates accurate welds that do not change the measurements of the component and will be able to withstand steam, hot water, gases, lubrications, sprinkling, and industrial processing systems.
Main Duties / Responsibilities
Lays out, aligns and welds components that are fabricated, cast and forged to assemble structural forms such as machinery frames, tanks, pressure vessels, furnace shells, buildings and pipe, according to blueprints and metallurgy.
May be required to use Gas-Metal Arc, Flux-Cored Arc, Gas-Tungsten Arc, Submerged Arc, or Shielded Metal Arc welding processes. Bolts, clamps and welds together metal components of products such as piping systems, plate, pipe and tube or structural shapes, using arc and arc gas welding equipment.
May remove excess weld, defective weld material, slag and spatter, using carbon arc gouge, hand scrapper, grinder or power chipper.
Connects cable from welding unit to obtain amperage, voltage, slope and pulse as specified by procedure or supervisor.
Manually guides electrode or gun along weld-line, maintaining length of arc and speed and movement to form specified depth of fusion and bead, as judged from color of metal, sound of weld, and size of molten puddle.
Obtains specified electrode and inserts electrode into portable holder or threads consumable electrode wire through portable welding gun. Examines weld for bead size and other specifications. Starts power supply to produce electric current.

Qualifications:
Experience
Technical Certification or NCCER required/High School Diploma or equivalent.
Previous years of experience in the field or in a related area.
Being proficient in SMAW, GTAW and GMAW welding processes. Capable of certifying on multi-process pipe.
May require x-ray qualities.
5 Years of Welding Experience

Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.

Respiratory protection is common and may be required.
Responsible for observing and complying with all safety and project rules.
Required to pass employer performance tests or standard tests to meet certification standards.
May assist in lifting, positioning and securing of materials and work pieces during installation.
Performs minor maintenance or cleaning activities of tools and equipment. Loads, transports and unloads material, tools, equipment and supplies.
May preheat work piece, using hand torch or heating furnace.
May clean or degrease weld joint or workplace, using wire brush, portable grinder, or chemical bath.
May repair broken or cracked parts and fill holes.
Visualize objects in three dimensions from plans and drawings.
Apply basic mathematics to solve problems.
Must have the ability to weld in 2g, 4g, and 6g conditions.
Must be able to Stick and Tig weld on Pipe.
Will be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to: hard hat, safety glasses/goggles, ear plugs/muffs, masks/respirators, safety vests, gloves and leather work boots. Welding hood, hard hat must be worn under welding hood at all times

Will work in all weather conditions ranging from warm/hot – cool/cold. Occasional rain.
Will work at different elevations.
Dusty environment.
Noise levels will be moderate to high.
Job site will contain light to heavy equipment vehicles, small to large equipment, materials, communication equipment and tools.
People standing, walking, sitting, signalling and talking.
Bells, whistles and alarms.

Pre Start and Toolbox Talks
Complete Take 5 assessment as required.
Participate in workplace inspections.
Refer to tool list appropriate for craft level. Homemade tools are prohibited.
