Job Description: Certified Nursing Assistant

Department: Nursing

Supervisor: Director of Nursing

General Description

  • Assist nursing personnel in providing assistance to residents with all activities of daily living within C. N. A. scope of practice, under the direction and supervision of an RN or LPN.

Qualifications

  • Must be certified in the state of Colorado as a nurse’s assistant
  • Previous experience in hospital or nursing home preferred.
  • Must have a strong sense of responsibility, moral integrity, and common sense.
  • Good physical and mental health and evidence of maturity.
  • Must have skills in working cooperatively with nursing staff as well as other professionals and have the ability to organize and carry out responsibilities efficiently and effectively.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately in a wide variety of circumstances, both verbally and in writing.
  • Must have patience and tact, and ability to interact with residents based on whatever maturity level at which they are currently functioning.
  • All reference verifications are favorable in all categories of character and performance.
  • Compassion and patience are essential.
  • Have ability to lift 50 lbs. minimum

Working Conditions

  • Well-lighted, well-ventilated facility, often in resident’s rooms, hallways, and dining areas, all of which may be subject to noise, distractions, and interruptions, possibility of muscle strain from lifting or twisting exists.
  • Interacting with the general public, often in adverse conditions; many residents and their families are under emotional stress dealing with issues of illness, hospice, death, and grief.
  • Frequently changing conditions in which one must be attentive and able to respond appropriately.
  • Constant necessity to respond maturely and effectively with residents, families, staff and other professionals.
  • Appropriately represent facility in dress and demeanor.

Duties

  • Specific duties are assigned at the discretion of the DON and may be adjusted to meet the needs of the facility and the expertise of personnel available.

Nursing

  • Answer resident lights promptly.
  • Receive assignments and check resident schedule for shift.
  • Provide general care for residents: bathe and dress resident and see that they are properly dressed and comfortable at all times, shampoo and hair care, shave male residents, trim nails, assist with personal hygiene and make beds keeping the rooms in order.
  • Give showers and baths and encourage self-help.
  • Assist residents with diet: check diet tray with diet order before serving, serve trays, help feed if necessary, and give personal care after meals.
  • Settle residents for naps.
  • Serve nourishments as ordered by physicians and fill water pitcher every shift with fresh water.
  • Assist resident to and from the bathroom, offer bedpans, and keep incontinent residents clean at all times, changing linens as often as needed.
  • Prepare residents for activities, therapy, recreation, and transport them to other areas of the facility.
  • Assist residents with activities of daily life such as operating TV’s or radios and doing whatever possible to promote comfort, security and rehabilitation.
  • Settle residents for the night and place call bell within reach.
  • Assist families, visitors, and guests as needed.
  • Assist with or perform procedures as outlined, with proper instruction and supervision, these include: admitting, transferring, discharging residents, taking and recording vitals, measuring and recording intake and output, change slings and colostomy bags, give special skin care to residents in casts, care for residents in isolation, assist with care of dying and deceased, properly use safety devices and follow safety precautions.
  • Apply aseptic technique in all resident care to prevent spread of disease and infection.
  • Observe residents and note physical condition, attitude, reactions, appetite, etc., and report changes or unusual findings to supervisor.
  • Assist with restorative and rehabilitative care of resident and instruct resident in self-help, use of medical appliances, etc.
  • Perform unit-cleaning duties that are not performed by housekeeping as directed.
  • Understand that it is my obligation to report any work related injury to my direct supervisor as soon as possible.

In-Service Education

  • Participate in all required in-service meetings to fulfill state requirements of 18 hours within a year.
  • Participate in selected continuing education programs if available.

Responsibilities

  • Understand and abide by established policies of the facility and interpret them to concerned parties.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information; maintain a professional demeanor.
  • Account for the use of time, report sickness, and plan vacation and holiday time with director of nurses.
  • Prepare all required reports and submit to LPN, RN, and DON.
  • Other specific duties as assigned by LPN, RN, DON.
