About This Position

We are looking for an energetic individual with a passion for improving optimal management of common injuries seen in the military health system. This is a highly dynamic position requiring high levels of curiosity, independence, and drive. Every day is different.

The Clinical Social Worker will provide direct treatment to active and retired service members and their families. The Clinical Social Worker will provide individual counseling to people experiencing chronic pain and related mental health and substance use disorders, utilizing mindfulness-based and cognitive-behavioral methods. Individuals are expected to create and maintain therapeutic alliance with patients and study participants throughout the life of the study to help maximize follow-up. Individuals will also work with teams conducting and overseeing the trials at different military sites and civilian academic centers, working closely with other staff providers in Family Medicine, Orthopaedics and Physical Therapy.

This is an on-site position assigned to the Madigan Army Medical Center on Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Tacoma, Washington. A thorough government background check will be required.

About This Project

This individual will be helping the primary investigator and study team successfully execute large clinical trials and studies related to musculoskeletal disorders. Current trials include elements of clinical care for back pain, knee osteoarthritis, post-surgical pain management, bone stress injuries and optimization of return to duty after injury. A variety of physical therapy interventions are included, as well as holistic approaches that include health coaching, motivational interviewing, and mindfulness-based treatments. This position will support this holistic approach to care.
Responsibilities:
  • Coordinates services for those clients who move out of region to ensure continuity of care
  • Advocate for clients as needed, and assist with negotiating systems to acquire resources and services, including assisting with paperwork completion, while consistently demonstrating a caring attitude that exceeds the client's expectations for services
  • Attends and participates in patient care conferences, team conferences, professional staff conferences and any other appropriate professional activities
  • Reviews and evaluates professional records to ensure compliance IAW hospital and Departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Cognizant of and adhere to all applicable regulations and guidelines
  • Performs development duties that assist current programs managed or developed to help ensure work efforts are successful
  • May serve as subject matter expert to the research team and provide guidance on the preparation of technical progress report

Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in Psychological Counseling or Behavioral Counseling (or Social Work) required
  • Independent Clinical Social Work license or Professional Counselor license (to include Licensed Marriage and Family Counselor) from recognized state with regulatory authority required
  • Experience with mindfulness-based therapy is preferred
  • Experience treating people with chronic pain and opioid-related issues is preferred
  • 3-5 years’ experience in social work preferred
  • 3-5 years’ non-profit, research, or healthcare experience desired
  • 1-3 years’ experience in staff or project management
  • Demonstrate competence in oral and written communication
  • Must be organized, attentive to detail, and possess a positive, friendly and professional demeanor
  • Must be flexible with changing priorities and able to communicate in a diplomatic and professional manner
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment in fast-paced, high-pressured environment with strict deadlines and to manage multiple projects
  • Computer skills including at least intermediate level experience with Excel and other Microsoft Office Software
