Job Summary:

Child Watch Staff will supervise and implement activities in a setting designed to provide children a safe and enriching place to be supervised while their parents/guardians are in other areas of the YMCA. The Child Watch Staff live out the YMCA mission, vision, and values.


Position in Corporate Structure:

The Child Watch Staff will report to the Healthy Living Director.


Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Healthy Living Director, the Child Watch Staff while on duty will be responsible for related services including participant check in, check out, activity leadership, character development and facility Covid protocols. This is a part-time position with hours and days varying depending upon YMCA needs.


Essential Functions/Primary Roles and Responsibilities

  • Actively participates with all children in providing a program that meets the emotional, physical, intellectual needs of both the individual child and the group.
  • Leads daily enrichment activities including active games, STEM, and Arts.
  • Models appropriate interactions with the children individually and in groups and encourages their involvement in activities.
  • Models appropriate positive guidance techniques that include: redirection, positive reinforcement of childrens efforts, and anticipation of elimination of potential problems.
  • Encourages identification and verbalization of feelings.
  • Participates in the maintenance of the facility to ensure it is clean at all times. Including but not limited to: wiping off fingerprints, picking up trash, cleaning up spills, cleaning furniture, toys and supplies, sweeping up after meals, or art activities, wiping off tables, keeping bathrooms clean, stacking chairs, EACH DAY, etc.
  • Remains constantly aware of the growing needs of each child, offering new and enriching experiences as needed.
  • Participates in planning with other staff to include lessons/activities.
  • Maintains a good relationship with parents through regular communication and active participation with children.

Essential Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Required: Current CPR-PR/AED and First Aid certification or obtain certification with in the first 60 days of hire and maintain current certification thereafter.
  • Recommended: Relevant experience and/or related certifications in education, recreation, or other youth work.


ADA Requirements:

Working in a recreational facility setting requires standing, sitting, and walking. Position requires lifting up to 50 pounds, reaching above the shoulders, bending at the waist, climbing stairs, squatting, kneeling, and crawling depending on activities scheduled. Individuals must be able to grasp office supplies and equipment, communicate clearly via phone, email, and in person, and be able to work in a climate-controlled environment including fluorescent lighting and air conditioning.
