Position Duties

Summary
Provides customer service, internship and employment preparation and otherwise serves as the initial contact person with students, providing information and assistance relative to career exploration and employment based on students' needs. Coordinates and conducts orientations, workshops and presentation to students. Assists and advises students on matters related to college programs, enrollment, work-based learning, employment, and career preparation.

Distinguishing Career Features
The Career Readiness Technician coordinates and facilitates programs for career planning and post secondary education and training. This position requires demonstrated knowledge of employment application processes, scholarships, careers and special populations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists students, either individually or in small groups, on use of career exploration and employment resources. Assists students in utilizing computerized career information, planning, and assessment systems.
  • Assists students with research of potential occupations including but not limited to identifying the training and schooling requirements, special skills and abilities, long-term career growth opportunities, and aptitudes most positively contributing to success.
  • Refers students to counselors, academic advisors, assessment and orientation sessions, and other support services.
  • Sets up, organizes and implements activities for students such as, but not limited to, orientations, campus outreach, high school outreach, workshops and career fairs.
  • Maintains adequate inventory and updates digital and print materials and resources that are designed to inform students of community resources, internship, employment, work based learning and career opportunities.
  • Assist students with job-seeking activities such as resumes, cover letters, applications, interviews, etc.
  • Proctors certification examinations such as typing certifications and industry credentials.
  • Operate a variety of office equipment including computers, printers, copiers, scanners, and knowledge of all Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Performs administrative support for workforce development including record keeping, financial requisitions, and reimbursement.
  • Performs administrative support for special process such as committees, advisories, and team meetings, including preparation of meeting notes, letters, memoranda, reports and statistical data.
  • Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.
Knowledge and Skills
The position requires working knowledge of the activities associated with providing customer service and support for all students seeking opportunities for employment, internship, and career exploration. Requires a working knowledge of student support services. Requires knowledge of modern office systems, practices and procedures including skill at using personal computer software such as word processing, academic databases, and career assessment programs. Requires sufficient human relations skills to convey policies, procedures, and instructions to others. Requires well-developed language skill to prepare professional correspondence used in external communications. Requires sufficient math skills to compute sums, percents, and ratios. Requires sufficient knowledge of and skill at using a personal computer, common office productivity software, and to access student information from databases.

Abilities
Requires the ability to carry out the essential responsibilities of the position independently. Requires the ability to complete customer transactions demonstrating sensitivity to cultural diversity, including persons with disabilities, and the varied socioeconomic backgrounds served by the college. Requires the ability to assist students in addressing academic and career issues. Requires the ability to perform data entry onto academic databases. Requires the ability to analyze student needs and provide appropriate referrals. Requires the ability to apply sound judgment and to establish and maintain cooperative, productive working relationships with others. Requires the ability to convey a positive image of the college and describe or refer students to other services. Requires the ability to administer assessment devices and interpret standardized results.

Physical Abilities
Requires ambulatory skills to retrieve work materials and files; to stand or sit at a counter for extended periods of time. Requires sufficient arm, hand, finger dexterity in order to operate keyboard, typewriter and other office equipment. Requires visual acuity to read words and numbers. Requires auditory ability to carry on conversations with individuals and small groups in person and over the phone.

Working Conditions
Work is performed indoors where minimal safety considerations exist.

Qualification

Education and Experience
The position requires the equivalent of an Associates Degree and 2 years of related experience in an educational setting. Experience in skill training, job development, case management a personnel/employment function, career education, workforce development, or counseling, is preferred.

Licenses and Certificates
Requires a valid driver's license
