CARE SUPPORT SPECIALIST

Position Responsibilities Summary:

This is an elevated non-licensed caregiver role that ensures seamless care to clients during transitional periods and caregiver scheduling needs, as well as supports the clinical team. This position will perform caregiver tasks, peer observations, and skill reinforcement, interact with established and new inquiries/clients and assist with clerical needs in the office. This role also provides assistance such as filing, updating, and reviewing client files, and other non-clinical administrative needs as directed by the clinical or operational leadership team. The person in this role will be oriented to a variety of clients and will assist in introducing/orienting other caregivers with clients. This role may also provide skills demonstrations to PCA and CNA level caregivers in the office and in the field.

The Care Support Specialist will be expected to go to any assigned shifts in any location within BrightStar Care territory including the BrightStar Care Office as needed during their specified scheduled hours. Completes other tasks/projects as assigned.

Key Leadership, Management, and Accountabilities (LMA):

Provide client care as directed by the Director of Nursing or Clinical Care Nurses. Accurately observes and reports client and caregiver concerns to the clinical supervisor.

Provide administrative assistance as directed by Director of Nursing, Operations Manager or Clinical Care Nurses


Skilled and Training Competencies:

The Care Support Specialist must be proficient and able to demonstrate caregiving skills including but not limited to ADLs, IADLs, transfers/lifts, taking vital signs, assisting nurses with specimen collection, ensuring patient comfort, caregiver documentation, and reporting of patient’s condition to nursing supervisor/within the client record. Must complete all required In the Know Training and educational materials.

Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities:


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Be prepared to leave the office or other location /setting to go into a client’s home to perform care tasks. May be requested to work during non-routine business hours. The following items must be in order while working:
    • Dressed, groomed, and ready to go in Uniform with ID Badge
    • Arrangements made in advance to ensure availability
    • Cell phone charged and ringer turned on
    • Transportation available for use
    • Have shift reports forms, vitals logs, and nursing care notes on hand at all times
  • Must answer phone or return missed calls from BrightStar Care office/adminstrative staff within 30 minutes during specified scheduled hours.
  • Call the family of the assigned case to introduce yourself before arriving to all cases.
  • Demonstrate BrightStar Care core values and represent company in a positive manner at all times.
  • Perform caregiver tasks, taking vital signs, assist with collecting samples, medication reminders, ensuring patient comfort, and reporting the status of patients to the nurses.
  • Performing clinical administrative tasks including medication and physician order document filing, updating client files, reviewing tasks to support operations or clinical care.
  • Handle office tasks such as scanning, filing, generating reports, preparing materials setting up for meetings, and other administrative tasks.
  • Providing real-time scheduling support by booking appointments and preventing conflicts, as well as assisting scheduling team as needed.
  • Provide skills demonstrations to PCAs or CNAs in the office and /or client home at the direction of clinical supervisor.
  • Provide warm introductions/orientations to caregivers who are new to client cases.
  • Provide mentorship/peer observations to other field staff, as directed
  • Maintain “Top-Performer” status (ex: Keep the Hoku`alohi Promise)
  • Complete additional skills and/or condition specific training as directed.


Qualifications

  • BLS certification.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of documented patient caregiving experience is required. Current CNA is desired.
  • Negative TB skin test or chest x-ray
  • Licensed driver with reliable automobile that is insured in accordance with the organization requirements.
  • Self-directed and able to work with little direct supervision. Asks for clarification if questions arise
  • Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills and ability to express spoken and/or written ideas clearly in the English language
  • Treats clients, staff, and the public with courtesy and respect; presents a positive public image
  • Shows empathy for the needs of the client
  • Works as a team member; is helpful and collaborative with other staff
  • Ensures confidentiality and security of the client’s medical information
  • Completes Skills Competency with Clinical Supervisor

Job Limitations:

The Care Support Specialist will function as a non-licensed caregiver under the direction of licensed clinical staff when performing patient care tasks.


Working Conditions:

Contact with clients under a wide variety of circumstances. Care provided in client’s living environment with varying situations or in an institution such as a hospital. May be required to respond in emergency situations. Travel and overnight shifts may be required. Position includes tasks that have the potential for exposure to blood and other potentially infectious material (OPIM) such as body fluids/tissues.


Personal Protective Equipment:

May include gloves, mask, eye protection, shields and disposable outer covering.


Physical Requirements:

Must be able to stand walk, squat, bend, kneel, reach, twist, push and pull. Must be able to lift 50 pounds.


Travel Requirements:

  • Travel as needed for various staff and client care service needs.
  • May include business and role-related required training and attendance at local, regional, or national conferences.
    • Automobile (personally owned—domestic travel) A valid driver's license issued within the United States and personal automobile insurance are required for expenses to be reimbursed. Drivers should be aware of the extent of coverage (if any) provided by his or her automobile insurance company for travel that is business or not personal in nature. Reimbursement for use of a personal automobile is based on the BrightStar Care mileage rate.
