Position Summary
The Chef, will prep, cook, and plate meals to meet the needs of the overall food-service operation of the camp. Camp Lakota is a Girl Scout overnight camp that serves girls in grades 2-12. Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.
Essential Job Functions
Assist in the daily operations of the camp food and dining hall service.

  • Plan and prepare nutritionally balanced camp meals, snacks, and pack-out food.
  • Ensure the safe, efficient preparation and service of camp meals.
  • In coordination with the Food Service Director, manage the camp menu which includes special diets, salad bar, and snack items for the summer.
  • Track meal counts, food consumption and waste, adjust as needed.

Under the direction of the Camp Director and Food Service Director, assist in overseeing inventory and the ordering of food, equipment, and supplies.

  • Maintain accurate and up to date inventory of food and kitchen supplies.

Ensure high standards of cleanliness, sanitation, and safety.

  • Arrange for the routine maintenance, sanitation, and upkeep of the camp kitchen; per San Bernardino Health Department and American Camp Association standards.
  • Clean and maintain all food-service areas, including kitchen, dining hall, dry storage, walk in refrigerators, freezers and trash receptacles.
  • Inspect equipment and ensure repairs as necessary.
  • Promote practices that seek to reduce waste, reuse items, and recycle as much as possible.
  • Properly store kitchen food and supplies at end of camp season.

Work as a collaborative member of the food service team.

  • Ability to organize and coordinate job tasks with Food Service Director, other Chefs, and Food Service/Kitchen Assistants.
  • Assist with directing the work of Food Service/Kitchen Assistants.

Manage the routine sanitation of kitchen, dining hall, and related equipment.

  • As needed, wash all dishes, serving and preparation equipment, and utensils according to regulated washing methods and temperatures.
  • Clean, organize, and maintain all food-preparation and storage areas.
  • Reduce waste, reuse items, and recycle as indicated through the camps procedures.
  • Collect and dispose trash in kitchen and dining hall areas following camps procedures.

Chefs have a designated relationship with their supervisor, the Food Service Director, work daily with Food Service/Kitchen Assistants, and Chefs, and through them may relate directly or indirectly to Camp Staff and Counselors regarding programmatic camp and staff needs.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications (Minimum Education and Experience)

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Must have or be able to obtain Kern County approved ServSafe Certificate prior to first day of work.
  • Must be able to obtain or become certified in First Aid/CPR prior to first day of work.
  • Ability to drive, possession of a valid drivers license, and clean DMV record.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in camp food service: food preparation, family & buffet style serving, and institutional kitchen equipment.
  • Knowledge of current health and safety laws and practices.
  • Ability to pass a background check.
  • Must be committed to work the entire camp season and attend all pre-camp trainings.
  • Ability to live onsite for the duration of the camp season.

Job Type: Temporary

Pay: $18.00 - $21.00 per hour
