Job Location:
The Adobe Mountain School is a secure care juvenile correctional facility for the custody, treatment, rehabilitation, and education of committed youth. The Adobe Mountain School is fully accredited as a public education agency or school district and is located approximately 19 miles north of downtown Phoenix.

Job Summary:
The Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections (ADJC) is seeking Building Maintenance Specialist applicants who are passionate about their profession and who will be committed to making a difference in the lives of Arizona’s underserved youth. This position is responsible for, but not limited to, training, mentoring, and supervising the adjudicated youth work crews; installing and maintaining complex watering systems; well maintenance; well water treatment and testing; HVAC preventative maintenance/changing filters and belts; keeping grounds well-groomed and weed free; conducting tool/equipment repairs; maintaining tool accountability; maintaining records of materials used; ensuring completed projects meet specifications, and exercising good judgment when making decisions that impact the agency. Job Duties:
  • Performing electrical, plumbing, carpentry, welding, painting, masonry, custodial, HVAC, and grounds keeping/landscaping maintenance tasks of ADJC buildings and grounds.
  • Training, mentoring, and supervising adjudicated youth work crews.
  • Keeping grounds well-groomed, weed free and installing and maintaining complex watering systems.
  • Performing periodic inspections and preventative maintenance of ADJC facilities and equipment.
  • Conducting tool/equipment repairs, maintaining tool accountability, and operating power tools and equipment.
  • Following all safety rules and regulations.
  • Maintaining records of materials used and ensuring completed projects meet specifications.
  • Responding to emergency maintenance situations.
  • Completing and attending all training and meetings are required/scheduled.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):
Knowledge of:
  • Preventative maintenance; building repairs; remodeling; construction techniques.
  • Hands-on training; employee mentoring; safety practices.
  • Landscaping techniques.
  • Custodial cleaning.
  • Verifying work hours.
  • Basic computer skills including the Google Suites applications (Gmail, docs, sheets, presentations, etc).
Skill in:
  • Common and specialized tools used in construction and groundskeeping
  • Following directions.
  • Reading/Comprehending sketches, drawings, and utility diagrams.
  • Electrical, plumbing, HVAC, landscaping, carpentry, and general building trades.
  • Maintaining and securing tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Scheduling and prioritizing work.
  • Operation of groundskeeping equipment and power tools.
  • Applying plant chemicals.

Selective Preference(s):
The preferred candidate will have:
  • Two (2) or more years of professional experience providing building maintenance, including landscaping or groundskeeping.
  • Certifications/training in carpentry, plumbing, heating/cooling, electrical, or groundskeeping preferred.

Pre-Employment Requirements:
  • Successful completion of a comprehensive background investigation, drug test, and medical/ physical examination.
  • Requires possession of, and ability to retain, a current valid Arizona-issued driver's license. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license records checks, maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12).

Requires acceptable performance history as demonstrated by:
  • No formal discipline within one year preceding this job posting close date, and;
  • An overall rating of “meets expectations” or higher on the most recent employee performance evaluation.
