We are seeking individuals interested in joining our team with skills in carpentry, concrete forming and finishing, welding, and equipment operation (e.g. dump truck, loader, backhoe) and perform manual labor.

As a member of the bridge repair and construction worker team, you will:
  • respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions
  • operate light to medium-duty equipment to perform bridge maintenance and construction related tasks
  • form footers, abutments, wing walls, and place and finish concrete
  • erect steel beam structures, install timber and concrete bridge decks
  • complete pre-trip inspections, demonstrate proper jobsite protection techniques

Position requires physically demanding labor over, in, and around water from boats and scaffolding at various heights and in harsh weather conditions.
VDOT is an emergency response agency and this position is considered essential, therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations.

Minimum Qualifications
You are minimally qualified if you have:
  • knowledge of highway and bridge maintenance methods, equipment, materials, and safety practices
  • experience in carpentry, concrete forming and finishing, and welding
  • ability to perform heavy manual labor, including frequently lifting
  • skill using and maintaining light to medium duty equipment, hand and power tools
  • ability to work at heights, over and in water, in heavy traffic and under adverse conditions
  • ability to perform mathematical calculations to measure and lay out constructed elements on bridges and culverts
  • ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter

Preferred Qualifications
Preferred qualifications include:
  • valid CDL Class A with appropriate endorsements
  • valid certified crane operator with appropriate endorsements
  • experience in bridge maintenance and construction
  • experience fabricating or welding steel components
  • skilled in carpentry, building forms, concrete placement and finishing
  • experience in construction
