Associate Scientist/Scientist - Cellularization Job at United Therapeutics

United Therapeutics Manchester, NH 03101

The job details are as follows:
What We Do
United Therapeutics Corporation focuses on the strength of a balanced, value-creating biotechnology model. We are confident in our future thanks to our fundamental attributes, namely our commitment to quality and innovation, the power of our brands, our entrepreneurial culture and our bioinformatics leadership. We also believe that our determination to be responsible citizens - having a positive impact on patients, the environment and society - will sustain our success in the long term.
We currently have five approved products on the market and a long-term mission of providing an unlimited supply of transplantable organs for those who need them.
Our company was founded by an entrepreneur whose daughter was diagnosed with a life-threatening condition. She sought to find treatment options and a cure for her daughter and patients like her. We are founder-led, and relentless in our pursuit of "medicines for life". We continue to research and develop treatments for cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, pediatric cancers and other orphan diseases.
In 2021, we became the first publicly-traded biotech or pharmaceutical company to take the form of a public benefit corporation (PBC). Our public benefit purpose is to provide a brighter future for patients through (a) the development of novel pharmaceutical therapies; and (b) technologies that expand the availability of transplantable organs. At the same time, we seek to provide our shareholders with superior financial performance and our communities with earth-sensitive energy utilization.

How you’ll contribute
The Organ Manufacturing (OM) program seeks to expand its team with a biomedical engineer with the knowledge and capability to develop cutting edge 3-D printing bio-inks for organ scaffold printing. This engineer will lead both internal and external development efforts to design and formulate bio-inks, provide expertise on biomaterial properties required for lung scaffold printing, cell-material interactions, and biomaterials characterization. This work will support the development of methods to produce 3D printed lung scaffolds that are suitable for recellularization and will include both in-house development and project management of external partners.
  • Contribute to the team’s biomaterials and bio-ink development efforts internally and at partner sites
  • Actively contribute to bioink development
  • Establish and maintain a deep understanding of current and emerging technology in the biomaterials and bioink space
  • Establish and expand relationships with development partners
  • Provide hands-on reduction to practice for manufacturing of prototypes for the Organ Manufacturing program, including the use of bio-materials, non-biologic polymers, coupling and crosslinking chemistries and coatings
  • Perform method and assay development of proposed high-throughput approaches to assess cytotoxicity and biocompatibility
  • Perform 3D in vitro cell culture experiments to assess cell viability, proliferation, and migration for bioink development
  • Provide expertise in biology at surfaces interfaces, including biomolecule recognition and recruitment, cell physiology, promotion of desirable cellular expression, characterization of surface molecular functionality and protein deposition, and bio-interfaces
  • Provide expertise regarding biomaterials and testing required for such materials to be used in a 3D printing process; as well as devise test methods to evaluate material properties and performance when existing test standards are not well established.
  • Work closely with the Organ Manufacturing software development team and mechanical engineering team to integrate hardware and software with bioink development
  • Provide expertise regarding surface modification, crosslinking, and coatings, particularly with regards to differential material interfaces and luminal surfaces that will ultimately contact cells
  • Follow existing test practices and develop additional experimental plans to achieve project milestones; understand and adhere to critical path activities, assemble equipment necessary to execute experimental plans for prototype development
  • Maintain high level of communication with internal cross-functional R&D team, as well as external vendors, and consultants
  • Conduct (and supervise, if necessary) lab work and prototype performance testing, and interpret data and results to provide guidance on design iterations
  • Make recommendations and set new directions for the project based on data, test results, and feedback from our customers/partners
  • Other duties as assigned

For this role you will need
Minimum Requirements
  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Biomedical Engineering, Cell Biology (or equivalent)
  • Track record of success (products and/or publications) in biological; scaffold design and surface functionalization for tissue engineering applications
  • 1+ years of prior research experience in development and testing cell interaction on hydrogels, peptides and/or bioinks (2+ for Scientist level)
  • Experience with imaging techniques (confocal imaging, microcospy techniques)
  • Scientist level will require an additional 2+ years of experience in an engineering R&D environment
Preferred Requirements
  • 3+ years prior research experience involving materials characterization using different imaging modalities
  • Experience with stromal cell biology, ECM production and tissue remodeling
