The Department of Primary Care at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine invites applications from individuals who possess interest, experience, and enthusiasm for teaching in an integrated curriculum with a team of clinical and biomedical faculty. We are looking for individuals with expertise in osteopathic primary care, but also with interest in geriatrics.

The Physician Faculty member serves as a member of their Department, works with any Divisions within the Department, and has academic, curricular, clinical, service, and/or research problem solving skills and experience. The Physician Faculty member is part of a team of physicians and staff in the department that work together to create and support excellent education, scholarly activity, and community service for the department, college, and university. It is a full-time position on a non-tenure track; rank commensurate with the candidate’s training and experience.

On-campus clinical practice opportunities include MatureCare, a geriatrics practice based in skilled and long term care facilities and assisted living facilities; and the student health center. The percentages of clinical activity vary with position and will be discussed with the department chair as part of the application process.


Responsibilities
Provide teaching, assessment, planning, implementation, and development in the Osteopathic Clinical Skills and Osteopathic Medical Knowledge courses for first- and second-year medical students. This includes teaching in history taking, physical exam, and osteopathic manipulative medicine skills; clinical skills training; providing clinical correlation with anatomical and biomedical sciences; assessment of student performance and knowledge; and precepting MS2 students.

Academics and Teaching:
  • To participate directly in the instruction of medical students within the college through lecture, module preparation, small group experiences, and in clinical settings.
  • To participate in precepting medical students within the clinic, by giving formal and informal clinical instruction and supervision.
  • To participate in teaching students of other colleges or graduate programs.
  • To help in planning and implementation of the curriculum vision, mission, and strategic plan.
  • To promote the interests and welfare of the department (faculty, staff, & students).
  • To help with the development of the educational programs of the department and give curricular input to the courses in such a way as to maintain academic standards and quality within the educational programs.
  • To participate in and seek to expand the educational offerings of the department to COM, the UNE colleges, and the community in professional and public forums for students, practitioners, and lay persons.
  • To help promote research and outreach services of the COM
  • To pursue inter-departmental and inter-college cooperation in educational and research programs.
  • To help maintain communication between the course faculty, the students, the administration, and other departments within the college, and other colleges within the university.


Research and Scholarly Activity (encouraged but not required):
  • To participate in quality educational/academic, clinical, or scientific projects.
  • To maintain a record of written presentations, publications, and other scholarly activity in recognized scientific journals, and books.

Service to the College and University:
  • To participate in and serve on committees within the college and the university.
  • To participate in community relations efforts to extend and enhance the visibility and reputation of the Department, the College of Osteopathic Medicine, and the University of New England.
  • To serve on state and regional societies, and agencies, bureaus, and committees of the profession and specialty or discipline.
  • To comply with UNE and professional standards and regulations including but not limited to HIPPAA, OSHA, and safety training.
  • To perform related duties as assigned as necessary.


Qualifications
Board Certified DO Physician in Family Medicine/Internal Medicine – comfort with performance and teaching basic skills in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine is required. Allopathic training will be considered on an individual basis if these skills have been obtained.
  • Graduate of an accredited college of Osteopathic Medicine.
  • Curricular and teaching experience in formal and informal teaching, and learner supervision and evaluation (preferred).
  • Clinical practice experience of at least 5 years (preferred).
  • Experience/expertise in holistic long term care medicine.
  • Experience in bedside clinical teaching/precepting (preferred).
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
  • Have or be eligible for Maine licensure to practice.
