JOB SUMMARY

Under the review of the Director of Community Standards, the Associate Director of Community Standards serves to provide innovative leadership for a student-centered campus conduct system.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities include managing the day-to-day operation of the Department; coordination of individual student discipline; development of creative responses to student conduct issues; implementation of a comprehensive educational process for helping members of the University community fully understand their individual and group rights and responsibilities; and the development of a comprehensive approach to issues of academic misconduct.

Lead the management of the day-to-day operation of the Department including case workflow, staff activities, and supervision of staff including direct supervision of the Assistant Directors in a unionized environment. Along with the entire staff, this position assists in the development, coordination, and communication of The Student Code, the University’s student conduct system. This includes coordinating the timely flow of case resolution, training all personnel, investigating and resolving violations as an investigating student conduct officer and hearing officer with full authority to issue sanctions up to and including University Expulsion, and coordinating a system to assure compliance.

Responsible for the coordination and at times, oversight of the following areas:

Day-to-day operations:

  • Serve in the absence of the Director of Community Standards with the ability to make any decisions as needed.
  • Make and implement decisions on the behalf of Community Standards related to the management of The Student Code.
  • Work with appropriate University officials to solve issues and problems that fall within the responsibilities of Community Standards, which include but are not limited to, behavioral issues and academic misconduct issues.
  • Research, evaluate, and recommend changes in policies and procedures as related to The Student Code.
  • Interpret federal and state laws regarding behavioral acts and University compliance.
  • Collect and interpret data regarding student conduct statistics, sanction effectiveness
  • Collaborate with campus partners to develop procedures and educate registered student organizations.
  • Assist students, faculty, and staff in reaching settlements of disputes/complaints regarding behavior. This includes all stages including information collection, fact-finding, and resolution development.
  • Coordinate responses to behavioral incidents at the regional campuses.
  • Serve as a resource to the University community regarding the interpretations of The Student Code, disruptive students, and makes presentations to groups.
  • Maintains cooperative relationships with representatives of schools, colleges, regional campuses, student support programs, and student organizations regarding policies related to maintaining an appropriate academic living/learning environment.
  • Troubleshoot issues regarding the electronic database system and work with the vendor to resolve issues.

Supervision and Training:

  • Lead the Assistant Director team in the planning and executing investigations and resolving high-level conduct matters prohibited by The Student Code, including federally mandated Title IX (sexual misconduct) and other student conduct-related violations including, but not limited to, incidents involving alcohol and other drug use/possession, harming behavior, student organization misconduct.
  • Responsible for a regular assessment of resolution timelines with the flexibility to adjust as necessary to ensure timely resolutions.
  • Develop the professional skills of the Assistant Director team by incorporating educational opportunities into their day-to-day work
  • Select, train, and evaluate investigating student conduct officers, hearing officers, and Probation Review Committee members.

Sanction Creation, Management and Compliance

  • Manage and assess the University Probation process that determines a student’s continued status at the University.
  • Work with students who have been suspended from the University to determine readmission eligibility through the UConn Compass Suspension program.
  • Develop, implement, manage, and assess student development sanctions designed to encourage behavior modification.
  • Coordinate all current behavior modification sanctions and create new programs given current trends and issues.
  • Maintain education records related to conduct in accordance with institutional and federal regulations.
  • Collect and provide information as needed regarding compliance in areas such as Title IX and Clery.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, or a related field.
  • Five plus years of progressive experience in higher education.
  • Experience supervising professional staff and working within a student conduct system.
  • Experience in managing conduct management software such as Maxient.
  • Significant knowledge and expertise in Title IX, Clery, and other key compliance issues.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 7 plus years of managing student conduct which includes policy development, investigations, and resolutions.
  • Previous experience supervising professional staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks in a dynamic, fast-paced climate with competing priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and regularly exercise judgment regarding a wide variety of administrative matters.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to engage in difficult conversations.
  • Active involvement in related professional organizations.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and stated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity issues within a student conduct setting.
  • Demonstration of a commitment to delivering equitable, inclusive, and accessible student conduct experiences.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, permanent position. The University offers a competitive salary, $77,568 to $96,960 commensurate with education and experience, and outstanding benefits, including employee and dependent tuition waivers at UConn, and a highly desirable work environment. Currently, a hybrid of on-campus/remote work schedules is permitted subject to authorization and University policy.
