Job Title: Assistant Residential Coordinator
Department: Residence Life & Off-Campus Housing
Division: Student Affairs
FLSA Status: Exempt, Part-Time
Reports to: Residential Coordinator
General purpose: Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) announces an opening for the position of Assistant Residential Coordinator. This opening is a part-time, 12-month, live-in professional position. MICA’s residential program is composed of approximately 1,000 beds distributed across multiple buildings and configured in apartment-style communities. The Assistant Residential Coordinator (ARC) is a member of the Residence Life professional staff team. They report directly to the Residential Coordinator (RC) and work closely to support the undergraduate Residential Advisors (RAs) and the on campus communities.
Summary of Essential Function: The ARC role has several components, but can be divided into two main areas of focus: residential community development and Residential Advisor support. The ARC is a member of the professional staff team and will serve in the professional on-call rotation for handling crises for on-campus residents. The ARC is integral in helping to promote student growth, personal development, and academic success for MICA’s on campus communities. The position is for a full academic year, including training and hall openings and closings.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Create and implement staff development sessions or workshops throughout the year based on assessment of RA needs in conjunction with the Residential Coordinator
  • Assist in developing year long professional development plan for the RA staff
  • Assist RC staff in developing and implementing RA trainings
  • Lead various residential staff meetings
  • Act as resource to undergraduate RAs, utilizing prior college and residence life experiences
  • Assist in acclimation and training of individuals new to the RA role
  • Uphold policy and mentor RAs through positive example and role modeling
  • Assist in planning and execution of RA regular staff outings and team building opportunities
  • Plan and execute end of semester student staff celebrations and recognition ceremonies
  • Participate in the professional on-call after hours emergency response rotation
  • Coordinate the apartment mate agreement process and any subsequent roommate mediations
  • Assist with student behavioral management and counseling as needed
  • Assist in the opening and closing of the residence halls (August, December, January and May)
  • Coordinate large scale or need based programming under the direction of the Residential Coordinator
  • Support departmental programming initiatives including assessment, planning and execution
  • Assist with departmental committees as needed
  • Support winter and summer break housing operations
  • Provide support to graduate students
  • Assist professional staff with other departmental and divisional duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Preference given to graduate students in a Higher Education or Student Services related academic program
  • Active listening and attention to detail required
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Organization and time management skills
  • Able to work independently and demonstrate leadership in a team setting
Minimum qualifications:
  • Required Education: Bachelor's degree
  • ARC must uphold college policy at MICA
  • ARC must live on campus in a designated professional staff apartment
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior experience in 1 or more of the following areas; Residence Life, youth mentorship/supervision, crisis response, counseling, programming/community development, academic/career advising or restorative practices.
Reporting to this position: No direct reports.
Compensation: Compensation is in the form of a partially furnished 1 bedroom apartment, an annual stipend, and a live-on compensation package. The apartment has a full kitchen, bathroom, and living room, and all utilities are included.

Physical demands and work environment:
  • Physical Demands: While performing the duties of the job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; balance; stoop; talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Work environment: While performing the duties of the job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Required training: Handbook orientation, Anti-Harassment, Hazard Communication, Emergency Plans & Fire Prevention, Personal Protection Equipment.
