POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Shelter Manager, the Shelter Worker is responsible for maintaining the daily operations of the Shelter. The position will be responsible for maintaining an environment for residents that is consistent with program mission and goals. The position is additionally responsible for ensuring the delivery of safe, shelter services.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

  • Monitors cameras, video equipment, and facility to ensure safety and security are maintained.
  • Receives residents into shelter.
  • Is visible and professionally interacts with shelter residents.
  • Ensures safety and well-being of residents at all times.
  • Assists shelter residents in processing issues and problem solving related to stay in shelter.
  • Facilitates conflict resolution with shelter residents.
  • Completes incident reports and records a descriptive narrative of incidents that require follow-up by management.
  • Communicates with Shelter Manager and office staff in person, over the phone, and through email to effectively communicate client needs and concerns
  • Reports facility, safety, and various concerns to management.
  • Cleans, sanitizes, and maintains the safe condition of the shelter.
  • Monitors and organizes shelter inventory and reports needed items to management.
  • Attend trainings and meetings relevant to agency mission and goals.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

  • Responsible for purchasing groceries and essential shelter supplies.
  • Responsible for collecting and distributing US Mail.
  • Responsible for arriving on time and following attendance requirements.
  • Must be available for on-call.
  • Assists with office support tasks such as copying, scanning, shredding, filing, uploading, and data input.
  • Completes daily room inspections
  • Responsible for upkeep of resident rooms as scheduled
  • Responsible for upkeep/cleaning of common areas
  • Responsible for facility laundry
  • Assists with the timely creation and maintenance of resident files and agency database entry.
  • All other job-related duties as assigned.

CONTACTS:

Immediate peers, peers in other departments, immediate supervisor/manager, customers, outside vendors/service providers and law enforcement personnel.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Position medium with lifting of 50 pounds maximum and lifting/carrying up to 25 pounds. Physical factors include constant sitting, use of hearing, smell, near/midrange/far vision, depth perception, color/field of vision; frequent standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, reaching, bending, and typing; occasional lifting/carrying, pushing/pulling, climbing, crawling and manual handling and driving. Working conditions include occasional exposure to weather, extreme heat/cold, wet/humidity, noise and vibration. Potential hazards include constant exposure to high risk and volatile situations, client contact, computer use; frequent exposure to chemicals, insecticides/pesticides, infectious exposure, needles/syringes; occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts and equipment use.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education: High School diploma or equivalent required.

Experience: One-year experience working in a human services and/or social services agency preferred.

Certification/License: Must have a valid driver's license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with annual driver's license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Will be required to undergo and successfully pass a background check. Must maintain a good moral character standing. Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must maintain confidentiality. Must have basic knowledge of, and/or ability to learn about victims and survivors of various victimization types. Must have basic knowledge or ability to learn crisis intervention techniques. Must have knowledge of or ability to learn about available community resources. Must have knowledge of or ability to learn company, agency and program policies and procedures. Must be able to interact and communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Must be able to establish and maintain professional boundaries with co-workers and clients. Must be able to work independently and/or on a team. Must be able to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to assess emergency situations and respond effectively. Must be able to prepare written reports. Must be able to exhibit patience, self-discipline and objectivity. Must be able to work under pressure and handle difficult situations. Must be able to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with management, co-workers, residents and the general public. Must be flexible and available to work various shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays. Native American preferred.
