Summary of Duties (not an exhaustive list):

  • To assist the Director of Anesthesia, Anesthesiologists, Assistant Director of Surgical Services, Management Coordinator and the charge nurses of the Operating Room in providing the necessary supplies and proper functioning equipment for the practice of Anesthesia at BCHO.
  • To assist the Anesthesiologists and Anesthesia Fellows and Residents in the setup for administration of anesthesia.
  • To assist in the conduction of anesthesia as needed. To provide other specialized technical services as needed.

Minimum Skills (should align with and be detailed on your resume):

  • Sets up anesthesia equipment and supplies for all cases during working hours. This is to include setup of anesthesia circuit, IV, placement of age appropriate endotracheal tubes, laryngoscopes, airways, masks, BP cuffs, pulse oximeter probe, EKG and thermometer.
  • All monitors should be turned on. Complex setup of appropriate IV fluids and pressure monitoring lines.
  • IV starting equipment should be made ready; syringes for atropine and succinylcholine are labeled and placed on the anesthesia cart.
  • Provides assistance to Anesthesiologist starting case without a resident and as requested. Is available to assist during cases as requested and needed.
  • Participates in routine maintenance of anesthesia machines, monitors, and other equipment with the assistance of the Biomedical Engineering dept.
  • Assists the OR Senior Buyer and materials management with maintaining and inventory of stock supplies used by the Department of Anesthesia.
  • Responsible for the daily stocking of the Operating Suites, Radiology, MRI and Cath Lab anesthesia machines and carts with required anesthesia supplies. Ensures there are no outdated medications or supplies on any anesthesia cart.
  • Sets up intravenous lines, fluid warmers and pressure lines. Cleans anesthesia instruments and equipment on a regular basis.
  • Disposes of and cleans (non-disposable) contaminated equipment and supplies between cases.
  • Utilizes Standard Precautions and proper techniques for washing and sterilization of supplies, working closely with the Sterile Processing dept..
  • Participates in the setup, quality control, and operation of the GEM Premier blood gas chemistry analyzer. Functions as a team member in the Operating Room. Demonstrates knowledge of different developmental stages in the pediatric environment.
  • Assists in the orientation of anesthesia residents to supplies and equipment at the beginning of their rotation as requested. Participates in the orientation of relief or part-time personnel assuming the duties of Anesthesia Technician.
  • Skills:Knowledge of anesthesia equipment and supplies
  • Knowledge of proper cleaning and sterilization procedures
  • Two years experience as an Anesthesia Technician in a similar environment or comparable related training, including chemistry, math, physics or electronics.

Education (please ensure date attended, degree, & school name are complete):

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Associates Degree preferred.
  • Basic Life Support Certification
  • Anesthesia Technician Certification preferred
