The South Dakota Value Added Agriculture Development Center (VAADC) is seeking a motivated Business Development Specialist to join our team. In this role, you will work closely with agricultural individuals and rural-based entities throughout the state to provide professional technical assistance. As a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting farmers, ranchers and value added agriculture operations, the VAADC helps start or expand crop, livestock, energy and technology ventures. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the growth and development of South Dakota's agriculture industry while gaining valuable experience in a dynamic and supportive environment. VAADC employees have the option to work remotely and also benefit from flexible scheduling arrangements.
Duties
Outreach & Technical Assistance
Evaluate prospect agricultural clients needs and determine appropriate courses of action to start and expand businesses in coordination with the VAADC team
•Serve as a resource for farmers/ranchers and agribusinesses and provide business development assistance
•Conduct market research, draft and critique feasibility studies and business plans, develop and review financial projections
•Identify and categorize funding sources to support VAADC and client activities; collaborate on development, writing, submission and execution of grant and other funding proposals to federal, state and private funding programs
Agricultural Business Training
•Create and implement client and community trainings and participant follow up to foster building of agricultural business
•Develop and conduct educational trainings to promote the cooperative business model and to support existing cooperatives
Program Support
•Optimize strategic processes through internal, board, and partner relationships to accomplish VAADC’s mission
•Build a framework for recruiting key players and clients through professional engagement that will expand agriculture economic thinking, develop stakeholder collaborations and increase brand awareness
Organization Support
•Formulate, organize and monitor general administrative tasks, tracking and reporting and record-keeping systems
•Identify operational inefficiencies and facilitate solutions
This position is full-time with benefits and includes apprenticeship work based on the job learning opportunity. The salary is based on the candidate's education and experience levels and is expected to fall within the range of $50,000 to $60,000.
Qualifications
•Strong work ethic with a self-motivated and adaptability nature
•Excellent written and verbal communication proficiency and interpersonal skills
•Strong analytical skills
•Attention to detail
•Knowledge of South Dakota production agriculture and the value added sectors
•Experience with computers, digital skills and common software, including Microsoft Office Suite
•Undergraduate degree in relevant field and/or experience with agricultural businesses and project management is beneficial
•Valid driver’s license and access to private vehicle
Location
Flexible within the state of South Dakota, with in-state travel expected
