Description of Job

The salary range for this position is -
$6,928.00 - $8,313.00 Monthly
$83,136.00 - $99,756.00 Annually

This position exists to function as an Administrative Law Judge to preside over prehearings and settlement conferences with the principal objective of deciding legal and factual issues in workers' compensation claims through the issuance of written orders so as to minimize the issues requiring formal adjudication before ALJs in the Office of Administrative Courts (OAC).

The position also exists to provide assistance, as may be permissible under applicable law and guiding ethical principles, as requested by the Director or other Division staff member in the analysis and resolution of legal issues arising from the overall administration of the Workers' Compensation Act.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

Graduation from an accredited law school AND five years of experience practicing Colorado Workers' Compensation law (legal experience acquired after admission to the bar).

Must be a resident of Colorado, have a current license to practice law in Colorado, and shall have been licensed to practice law in the State of Colorado for five years.

Substitutions:

None.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Participated in at least 25 merits hearings at OAC.
  • Pursue or defended at least 5 appeals to ICAO or higher.

Required Competencies:
  • In depth knowledge of the Colorado Workers' Compensation Act, system and rules of procedure.
  • Knowledge of the Colorado Rules of Civil Procedure and discovery practices.
  • The ability to convey complex legal theories either orally or in writing clearly and concisely.
  • The ability to handle high stress situations and maintain order in a courtroom.
  • Skilled with logical reasoning and legal argumentation.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be a Colorado resident at time of application.

  • Must have a current license to practice law in Colorado, and shall have been licensed to practice law in the State of Colorado for five years.
