Nature of Work

NATURE OF WORK
Under the supervision of the Adaptive Recreation Supervisor, the Adaptive Leader/ Specialist works independently to provide individuals with all abilities the opportunity to participate in recreation and leisure programs.

DATES/HOURS & LOCATION
Dates, hours and locations will vary. Programs are held 2-3 times per month, each program lasting on average 2-3 hours at various sites in Bloomington, Edina, Eden Prairie and Richfield. Programs may include Bowling, Good Happenings, Movies & Munchies and Cardio Fitness.

Job Duties

  • Preparing materials for and leading activities.
  • Supervising and guiding participants at all times.
  • Ensuring safety for participants.
  • Physically assisting participants as needed.
  • Encouraging social interactions between and among all participants.
  • Serving as an advocate for individuals with disabilities.
  • Preparing necessary reports & forms (i.e. attendance sheets, accident reports, etc.)
  • Handling money, ability to count registration money and give back correct change.
  • Attending staff meetings.
  • Wearing appropriate clothing for planned programs, including designated staff shirt.
  • Coordinates efforts to ensure Richfield is an equitable, inclusive and respectful organization and supports the City’s mission, vision and core values.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Prefer candidates who are 16 years of age or older.
  • Educational background and/or experience working with various disabilities.
3. Fluency in Spanish, Hmong, Somali, Vietnamese or other non-English language(s).

COMPETENCIES

  • Ability to work effectively and communicate with Adaptive Recreation Supervisor, co-workers, volunteers, participants and care givers/parents.
  • Ability to work scheduled shifts, arriving on time ready to work. If you are going to miss a shift due to illness or other commitments, you must notify the Adaptive Recreation Supervisor as soon as possible. You may be responsible for finding your own replacement in the event of an absence.
  • Enthusiasm to work with adults with disabilities.
  • Ability to refrain from cell phone usage during programs. Cell phone usage is prohibited during programs.
  • Demonstrates an ability to understand and respect the diversity of customers and co-workers, effectively communicating with individuals whose first language may be one other than English.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Essential functions require maintaining physical condition necessary for considerable physical activity such as standing, walking, kneeling, sitting, crouching, twisting, pushing, pulling, bending, stopping, squatting, and lifting materials and supplies ranging from 20-60 lbs.
