ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

The Community Development Department (CDD) is the planning agency for the City of Cambridge. The Environmental and Transportation Planning Division of the City of Cambridge’s Community Development Department is responsible for improving quality of life by working to protect and improve the city's environment, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and by planning environmentally friendly improvements to the city's transportation system.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

The Active Transportation Coordinator will manage and assist with the city’s education programs for elementary and high school student populations as well as the general public. The Active Transportation Coordinator will also support a variety of multi-modal transportation planning and infrastructure projects that further the City’s transportation goals. The Active Transportation Coordinator will be a member of the 15-person Environmental and Transportation Planning team.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Primary responsibilities will be in three main areas:

Safe Routes to School (SRTS) was created as a federal program to make it safe, easy, and convenient for children to walk and bicycle to school. Cambridge has unique implementation strategies that strongly focus on walking and bicycling. Working with several City departments, SRTS tasks include:

• Coordinate district-wide Safe Routes to School programming, resources, and communications.
• Integrate walk/bike education into school curriculum, building on existing efforts.
• Facilitate school based SRTS planning and identification of recommended walk/bike routes and engineering/enforcement recommendations.
• Create and promote district-wide encouragement programs and resources for schools.
• Serve on district committees and coalitions that will further SRTS Program goals and program sustainability.

The Community Bicycle Education Program provides quality educational programming to people who live, work, study, or play in Cambridge. Responsibilities include:

• Provide instruction in bicycle riding skills, rules of the road, bicycle maintenance, riding with families, and bicycle safety rules to groups.
• Plan for, promote, and lead bicycle and pedestrian trainings including high school pop-up education events and community courses to individuals of all ages.
• Lead group rides, summer camps and on-bicycle skill-building activities; assist with annual community bicycle rides. Select bicycle routes and assess risk.
• Organize and execute events; outreach to the community to ensure turnout, including engaging with residents and business owners.
• Engage and educate the public about City of Cambridge projects, initiatives, and other transportation safety topics at transportation fairs, Safe Routes to School events, and other transportation-related events.
• Transport bicycles and helmets to/from sites: assist in maintaining a fleet of about 30 bicycles and supplies.

Bicycle Parking and Bluebikes Station Siting. Cambridge has more than 1,000 public bike racks and adds more every year, as well as over 60 Bluebikes stations. Tasks include:

• Manage the on-street bicycle parking program including program strategy, locations, and special bike parking projects; oversee and expand seasonal bicycle stall program, monitor public requests, coordinate with other departments for approval and installation of racks.
• Work with the Bluebikes coordination team to develop long-range expansion plans and identify specific locations for new stations, compile and manage requests for new stations, and engage with community.
• Train and oversee a part-time intern to assist with processes.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education and Experience

• Minimum of four (4) years of related experience and a related Bachelor’s degree. An Associate’s degree with six (6) years of related experience or a Master’s degree with two (2) years of experience also acceptable. Specific required experience includes:
• Experience teaching youth of varied ages, from 2ndto 12thgrades, as well as adults.
• Experience engaging meaningfully with a diverse range of stakeholders; value team-teaching methods.
• Experience riding in urban areas; enjoy riding a bicycle and able to ride for work.
• Technical experience should include reading plans and dimensions, sketching plans, maintaining GIS layers of bike parking and other data.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Strong knowledge of bicycle maintenance and repair.
• Comfortable leading group rides, especially with youth; certified, or be willing to become certified, by the League of American Bicyclists (League Cycling Instructor)
• Reliable, punctual, and strong work ethic. Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on details.
• Positive, professional attitude and capacity to adapt quickly.
• Valid driver’s license with good driving record. The ability to drive a van.

Preferred:

• Transportation Planning experience.
• Proficiency in one or more other languages, such as Spanish, Amharic, Bangla, Portuguese, Haitian-Creole, and Arabic is beneficial.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires travel to and through the City to project locations, driving, walking, biking, bending, squatting, reaching, and stretching.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work involved is both indoor in a professional office setting and outdoors including construction sites and congested city roadways in all weather conditions. This position may be eligible for hybrid work under the City’s Telework Policy, depending on operational needs.

RATE: $65,545 - $91,137 + excellent benefits
