GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

The Academic Advisor & Student-Athlete Mentor Liaison to the Athletic Department acts as a knowledgeable representative of The Advising Center to support students, faculty, and staff in understanding Framingham State curriculum requirements, policies and procedures, and strategies to support student retention and persistence to graduation

EXAMPLES OF SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist all FSU students who visit The Advising Center with major exploration, course selection and registration, academic coaching, and campus resource referral
  • Carry advisee load of up to 75 Undeclared students
  • Serve as Academic Advocate during first-year and transfer orientations; present information on academic policies, degree requirements; and advising and registration resources and processes
  • Advise incoming undeclared transfer students during summer registration at transfer orientation
  • Advise first-year and transfer students on a walk-in basis
  • Advise first-year students on academic probation
  • Liaise with Registrar, Financial Aid, Student Accounts, and department chairs to help advisees navigate administrative tasks and roadblocks
  • Represent the Advising Center at events and activities including, but not limited to, the Major Minor Fair and Accepted Students Receptions
  • Assist Associate Dean with Academic Advising Advisory Group, a group that meets four times per year to discuss advising issues facing the University community
  • Assist Associate Dean with monitoring Advising email accounts throughout the academic year
  • Serve on relevant campus committees including, but not limited to, the Orientation Committee
  • Working with the Athletic Office, the advisor serves as a mentor and advising point person for varsity athletic teams. Teams are identified each year in consultation with the Athletic Office. The Advising Center team members each align themselves with a varsity team to serve as an advising mentor.
  • Accountable for ensuring that equal opportunity, affirmative action, and diversity are integrally tied to all actions and decisions in areas of responsibility.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Typical office environment. Most work occurs in the office or on the FSU campus.


Job Requirements:


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member
  • Demonstrated understanding of challenges facing first-generation, underrepresented populations and student-athletes

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree preferred
  • Academic Advising experience
  • Experience as or working with student athletes

Additional Information:


This is a full-time, exempt, benefits-eligible position in the Association of Professional Administrators (APA) bargaining unit with an official title of Staff Assistant. The starting salary for this position is $51,000.
