23-24 Gonzaga University - Waste Reduction Educator Job at AmeriCorps

AmeriCorps Washington, DC

This is an AmeriCorps national service position. It is contingent on funding and open until filled. As a Jesuit, Catholic, and humanistic institution, Gonzaga University is called to care for the planet and be a responsible steward of our fiscal, human, and earthly resources. Along with Spokane Community Colleges, we are one of several institutions of secondary education in the City of Spokane and Spokane County. The City of Spokane and Spokane County, like many other regions, have tried to increase their environmental stewardship through recycling and waste-reduction efforts. Many students originate in other parts of the state, the U.S., and the world, and with different origins come different expectations and rules for what can be recycled. The lack of consistent and persistent messaging and education leads to inconsistent recycling behaviors and recycling contamination, which is trash found in recycling streams. The member will continue engagement in a four-phase project to bring consistent and prominent waste reduction and recycling education across the Spokane region, focusing on a segment of the higher education population of Spokane.

Member Duties : The Member will support Gonzaga University's mission to care for the planet through education around consumption patterns and waste reduction to employees and students at GU and the Community Colleges of Spokane with the understanding that these individuals live, work, and play in the community for years to come. Phase 1: Member engagement, learning, and training. The Member will organize and share educational events to bring together solid waste staff from the two campuses, the City of Spokane, and Spokane County.
