KIPP Foundation Washington, DC

$45,000 a year

Company Description

By 2025, KIPP DC will build upon two decades of proven results to develop into a more impactful, innovative, and inclusive school system that provides joyful, identity-affirming learning experiences so that all students and alumni achieve extraordinary outcomes.

Our work is grounded in a commitment to excellence, equity, and justice. We believe all students have the right to rigorous, relevant, and joyful learning experiences led by exceptionally talented and diverse educators who promote student achievement and a sense of belonging. We believe students and teachers best succeed when surrounded by an ecosystem of supports, including our central headquarters team that supports KIPP DC’s 20 schools, 7,300 students, and 1,300 teachers, leaders, and staff members dedicated to this mission.

The Capital Teaching Residency is a nationally recognized, highly selective teacher training program that provides a pathway for new teachers to develop into outstanding educators. We believe that investment in our new teachers’ success is an integral part of providing rigorous, relevant, and joyful learning experiences for our scholars. As a Capital Teaching Resident, you play an active role in our mission. This is an exempt position and will report to the School Leader.

Job Description

The Capital Teaching Residency is a three-year program. Residents spend the first year of this commitment—their residency year—training in a KIPP DC classroom with an experienced mentor teacher and completing relevant coursework through a gradual release model. Through our gradual release model, residents are set up for success by becoming an integral part of their school community and gaining more responsibility in their classroom over time.

At the end of the residency year, residents who have completed all program requirements have the opportunity to interview for lead teacher or senior resident positions at KIPP DC or one of our partner public charter schools in the District.

Secondary residents will join the Relay Graduate School of Education (GSE). After successfully completing Relay coursework over Year 1 and Year 2, residents will obtain their Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree.

Secondary residents can work in grades 5-8 (middle school) or 9-12 (high school) in Math, Science, English Language Arts or Social Studies classrooms.

Qualifications

In the Capital Teaching Residency, you will:

  • Follow a gradual release model, taking on increasingly more and different classroom responsibilities throughout the school year as determined by classroom need and resident performance
  • Internalize and teach clear and concise developmentally-appropriate content to support student learning
  • Gather resources and prepare materials to ensure strong student engagement in lessons
  • Track, analyze, and use data to drive teaching and instruction

  • Implement school-wide student culture policies within classrooms and everywhere on campus
  • Conduct purposeful observations of excellent lead teachers
  • Participate in regular meetings with a mentor teacher and school coach, grade level meetings, and network-wide professional development
  • Participate in and implement feedback from observations, evaluations, and feedback meetings with school leaders, the Relay GSE team, and the Capital Teaching Residency team
  • Participate in the Relay GSE’s two-year Master of Arts in Teaching program.

    • After successfully completing Relay coursework over Year 1 and Year 2, residents will obtain their Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree.
  • In Year 1, attend Relay GSE classes 2 nights per week and complete all applicable coursework. These classes will be held in the evenings, after school hours.
  • In Year 2, attend Relay GSE classes 1-2 nights per week and complete all applicable coursework. This class(es) will be held in the evening, after school hours.
  • Take on additional responsibilities throughout the school as needed

What we look for:

  • Required undergraduate GPA of 2.75 or higher
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution by June 2023, all majors accepted
  • A belief that all students have the right to a high-quality education where educators play an integral role in providing support so that all students can succeed
  • Unquestioned integrity and commitment to KIPP DC’s mission and to advancing its antiracist ambition through their work with staff, students, alumni, and families
  • Successful track record of collaboratively working and building relationships with a wide range of people
  • Receives and reflects on feedback, while demonstrating an eagerness to grow
  • Initiative in generating ideas and solutions; solving problems and achieving results beyond what is expected
  • Quickly and positively accepts and adapts to new responsibilities
  • Excellent time management skills and detail- and results-oriented team player who is dedicated to getting the job done
