Position Summary:

Perform all pick-ups of donated and purchased food items from vendors and donors for The Salvation Army Food distribution programs and to load, unload and store them properly for program distributions.

Essential Functions:

  • Oversite and implementation of the daily pickup of all Food and Gift in Kind donations in accordance with established and approved Salvation Army policies; use of a Salvation Army vehicle will be limited to donation pickups and deliveries to Social Services related programs.
  • Oversite and implementation of all Loading, Unloading and Sorting of food items into groups as specified for the purpose of proper storage and refrigeration.
  • Oversite and implementation of pickups for USDA Commodities, Community Food Banks and Assigned weekly Retail Stores.
  • Assist Warehouse Manager with the proper placement of all donated items within the Social Services Warehouse.
  • Assist in the maintenance and the inventory of the Social Services Warehouse.
  • Assist in the preparation and packing of Social Services Food Boxes for weekly distribution.
  • Maintain Daily Collection logs for Gift in Kind donation records.
  • Maintain accurate statistical records and complete assigned reports.
  • Assist with all Seasonal pickups and deliveries of Food Boxes, Toys, and items for distribution for Christmas and Thanksgiving client activities.
  • Assist with the daily placement and collection of Kettles and Kettle Workers for the Christmas Kettle Season.
  • Maintenance and cleanliness of all equipment and vehicles in accordance to The Salvation Army and health code standards.
  • Must maintain a valid California driver’s license and must successfully complete the Salvation Army’s Decision Driving Safety Test before driving Salvation Army vehicles.
  • Must meet certification by participation in the Salvation Army’s fleet safety program.
  • Assist in the training and utilization of volunteer teams to assist with food management and delivery of meals to the homeless.
  • Assist all employees and volunteers to be effective in serving those in need.
  • Build and maintain healthy relationships with employees, clients, and other community partners and agencies.
  • Promote the Social Services Food Distribution Program and maintain good public relations of The Salvation Army.
  • Assist with food pantry activities as directed by the Corps officers, including but not limited to: Filling shelves and organizing food pantry areas.

Working Conditions:

Ability to walk, stand, bend squat climb, kneel and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis. Ability to be able to lift a minimum of 50lbs. Ability to grasp, push, pull objects and reach overhead.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Sacred Boundaries and Protect the Mission: Must complete the Online course for this area and pass the Background Check required by The Salvation Army for Employment. You will be occasionally exposed to work with children and vulnerable adults and must maintain appropriate boundaries.
  • Driver Requirements: Must be a licensed driver. Must also have completed and passed The Salvation Army Decision Driving Course.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

  • Language Skills: Must be able to understand, follow and give both written and oral instructions. The employee must be able to use speech and hearing for ordinary and telephone conversation. You must be able to communicate effectively and interact with coworkers, management, leadership and public in a positive and productive manner.
  • Mathematical Skills: Must be able to perform simple calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) and apply concepts such as ratios and percentages in practical situations.
  • Performance Skills: Must be creative, self-motivated, organized, flexible and possess leadership skills. Must also have a high degree of self-initiative.
