Job Details

Bethel School District is seeking appropriately licensed candidates to join a dynamic District Health team of registered nurses, health assistants, and administrators. Candidates must have the skills and abilities to foster trusting, professional and collaborative relationships with students, staff, and families. This position is 40 hours/week and follows a 220 - day calendar (August - June), some of the days may be flexed to support Summer School and Extended School Year programs.

About the position of Licensed Practical Nurse

Individuals in this position will perform specialized support services as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. The position assists in carrying out assigned nursing tasks and activities, promotes student safety and well-being, reinforces classroom programs, and maintains documentation records in a timely, accurate, thorough, and clear manner. The LPN may be assigned to provide health services to one or more schools, and the assignments can change, depending on emerging student health needs.


Successful Candidates will:


  • Possess strong knowledge and perform services in accordance to District policies and procedures; state and federal laws; and within the scope and practice of a Licensed Practical Nurse as outlined in Oregon Nurse Practice Act and Oregon Administrative Rules

Essential Functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Under the direction of a Registered Nurse, implements nursing care according to established priority of needs and according to standards of nursing practice;
  • Confers with Registered Nurse, to plan and oversee day-to-day routines with diabetic and other children with health concerns, including administering insulin to young children;
  • Assists with health related programs, like vision/dental/audiometic/health screenings/sexual health, weekly fluoride rinses in classrooms, containing the spread of communicable conditions like head lice, scabies, impetigo; administer immunizations as special clinics. This may involve calling parents/guardians;
  • Provides basic emergency medical and first aid care at the school site when not involved in the care of an individual student; assists nurse(s) with further care for students as needed; administers epinephrine and glucagon per protocol; administers medicine per protocol with written parent/guardian permission;
  • Works with a health assistants to maintain and update manual and computerized files and records of student health information, including immunization records, and updates on health concerns.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Follows through on assigned student health plans and maintains effective working relationships with the Registered Nurses, School Office Coordinators, Health Assistants and Teachers;
  • Conducts specialized assessments under the supervision of the Registered Nurse, recognizes urgent problems, and refers to Registered Nurse;
  • Maintains good basic problem solving with effective verbal and written communication skills;
  • Understands and executes verbal and written instructions, policies and procedures;
  • Promotes and preserves students' autonomy, dignity and rights in a non-judgmental, non-discriminatory manner that recognizes student diversity;
  • Protects confidential student information, and uses judgment in sharing this information in a manner that is consistent with current law;
  • Exhibits knowledge of job limitations and accepts supervision;
  • Able to work calmly in stressful situations;
  • Self-directed, able to work with minimal direct supervision and prioritizes workload to ensure efficient and high quality support is provided to staff and students.
  • Knowledge of student information systems and basic database operations.
  • Able to operate a multiple computerized systems including report generation procedures
  • Able to operate standard office equipment
  • Able to initiate or implement efficient procedures
  • Able to work with the public in a pleasant, tactful, and courteous manner
  • Able to maintain an appropriate and legal level of confidentiality regarding students, staff, and other individuals
  • Able to maintain regular, predictable and prompt attendance

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.;
  • Current and valid Oregon License to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN);
  • At least Six (6) months experience working in a hospital, community or home health clinical setting with patients/clients who exhibit chronic or technology-supported health concerns;
  • Valid state issued driver's license and insured vehicle available for use on the job;
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED card, epinephrine and glucagon certificates, or ability to obtain certificates in at least thirty (30) days of start date.
  • Culturally proficient educational philosophy and practices
  • Be prepared for a work environment that may occasionally require long work days, evenings, or weekend duties
  • Be fully vaccinated to meet the COVID-19 vaccine mandate or have an approved exception.

Highly desirable qualifications:

  • Bilingual or multilingual abilities, preferably Spanish/English
  • Experience working in richly diverse school communities and environments
  • Experience working in a K-12 public school system
  • Community health or public health experience preferred
